Enable Stakeholder completion evening

13/5/2018

Enable Stakeholder completion evening
Can I acknowledge the Minister, Hon Clare Curran, MPs, Councillors, Enable Chair Brett Gamble and the other members of the board, Enable CE Steve Fuller and the Enable team L&G.
I also want to acknowledge Garry Moore, who describes himself as an extinguished Mayor, but tonight who is a distinguished guest.  He is one of the reasons we are here tonight.

Enable is all about connections - and its origins are owed to a connection between Garry Moore as the then Mayor and Sachio Semmoto - a serial entrepreneur in telecommunications in Japan who led the development of Japan’s first optical fiber system, He had a house here in Christchurch because he loved golf. He became Garry’s personal adviser - after Garry said we owned the airport and the seaport, but hadn’t considered developing our data port.

That’s how things happen. And the rest is history. Tonight we thank Enable for their efforts delivering the network in a tough environment 18 months ahead of the original plan. That is an extraordinary effort.
The role of fibre broadband will play a highly significant role in the future of Christchurch as a smart, connected, enabled city, and through Enable we as a city are in charge of our connectivity destiny.

So thank you Garry for the vision, thank you Minister for the commitment and thank you Enable for delivering.
